1. Pakistan Salary Tax 2026-27 — The Basics
Salary tax in Pakistan works on a progressive system — the higher the salary, the higher the tax rate. But the rate does not apply to the whole salary — only to the part that falls in the higher slab.
Remember: annual income up to Rs 600,000 (Rs 50,000 a month) is tax-free. The threshold was the same in 2025-26 — Budget 2026-27 kept it, and did not raise it.
2. Salary Tax Slabs 2026-27
The Finance Act 2026 salaried slabs (Income Tax Ordinance, First Schedule Part I Division I), from 1 July 2026:
| Annual Income | Monthly Salary | Rate | Fixed Tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rs 0 — Rs 600,000 | Rs 0 — Rs 50,000 | 0% | Rs 0 |
| Rs 600,001 — Rs 1,200,000 | Rs 50,001 — Rs 100,000 | 1% | Rs 0 |
| Rs 1,200,001 — Rs 2,200,000 | Rs 100,001 — Rs 183,333 | 11% | Rs 6,000 |
| Rs 2,200,001 — Rs 3,200,000 | Rs 183,334 — Rs 266,667 | 20% | Rs 116,000 |
| Rs 3,200,001 — Rs 4,100,000 | Rs 266,668 — Rs 341,667 | 25% | Rs 316,000 |
| Rs 4,100,001 — Rs 5,600,000 | Rs 341,668 — Rs 466,667 | 29% | Rs 541,000 |
| Rs 5,600,001 — Rs 7,000,000 | Rs 466,668 — Rs 583,333 | 32% | Rs 976,000 |
| Above Rs 7,000,000 | Rs 583,334+ | 35% | Rs 1,424,000 |
The rate applies only to the part above the start of the slab, on top of the fixed tax. There is no surcharge on salaried individuals in 2026-27. For an exact calculation, use the salary tax calculator →

5. What Did Budget 2026-27 Give the Salaried Class?
The actual changes in the Finance Act 2026, compared with the 2025-26 slabs:
What Changed
- ✅ Rs 22–32 lakh: from 23% to 20%
- ✅ Rs 32–41 lakh: from 30% to 25%
- ✅ Above Rs 41 lakh: previously 35%, now 29%, then 32%, and 35% after Rs 70 lakh
- ✅ The 9% surcharge (above Rs 1 crore) abolished for salaried people
What Did Not Change
- ⚠️ 0% up to Rs 600,000, 1% up to Rs 12 lakh, 11% up to Rs 22 lakh — unchanged
- ⚠️ No difference for salaries up to Rs 183,333 a month
- ⚠️ Bonus, overtime and commission are salary (section 12(2)(a)) — the same slabs
- ⚠️ The 10% surcharge on non-salaried individuals remains
The effect of the surcharge: on a taxable salary of Rs 1.2 crore, 2025-26 tax was slab tax Rs 3,381,000 + surcharge Rs 304,290 = Rs 3,685,290; in 2026-27 it is Rs 3,174,000. According to FBR's Circular No. 2 of 2026-27, the salaried surcharge was withdrawn, while the 10% on “other individuals and associations of persons” continues.
6. Legal Ways to Reduce Salary Tax
These credits and allowances exist in the Income Tax Ordinance. A tax credit reduces your tax at your average rate — not your income.
- Voluntary Pension System (section 63): a tax credit on contributions to a pension fund approved under the VPS Rules 2005, up to 20% of taxable income. Example: on a Rs 300,000 monthly salary and an annual contribution of Rs 200,000, the credit is about Rs 23,111.
- Charitable donations (section 61): a tax credit on donations to approved NPOs, government hospitals, boards of education, universities and the like, up to 30% of taxable income. A cash donation counts only if made by crossed cheque.
- Children's fees (section 60D): if taxable income is below Rs 15 lakh, a deductible allowance on tuition fees — 5% of the fees, 25% of taxable income, or Rs 60,000 per child, whichever is lower. It is not applied in your employer's monthly deduction; it is claimed in the return.
- File your return: if too much tax was deducted or you want the credits above, file your annual return on IRIS and claim a refund under section 170. How to file a return
No longer available: the tax credit on life insurance premiums and shares (section 62) was abolished by the Finance Act 2022. Do not take out an insurance policy just to save tax.
Important: tax evasion and tax avoidance are different. The methods above are written into the law. Hiding tax by any unlawful means can lead to serious penalties.
7. People Working Abroad and Overseas Pakistanis
- Salary from employment in Pakistan is taxed in Pakistan — the same slabs
- A resident individual's foreign salary is exempt under section 102 if tax was paid on it abroad (deducted by the employer and paid to that country). Otherwise it is taxable, and section 103 gives credit for the tax paid abroad
- Whether you are resident or non-resident changes the answer — ask a tax practitioner about your own case
- Being on the Active Taxpayer List reduces withholding on PTA tax, property, bank profit and so on — not on salary
8. FAQ — Salary Tax Calculator Pakistan
Q1. How is salary tax calculated in Pakistan in 2026-27?
Multiply your monthly taxable salary by 12 to get annual income, then apply the Finance Act 2026 salaried slabs: 0% up to Rs 600,000, and above that each slab's fixed tax plus that slab's rate on only the part above its start. TaxCalc PK's salary calculator does exactly this. It treats the gross salary you enter as taxable — it does not apply exempt allowances or tax credits — so if part of your salary is exempt, your actual tax may be somewhat lower.
Q2. How much tax applies to a Rs 100,000 monthly salary in Pakistan in 2026-27?
On Rs 1,200,000 a year, Rs 6,000 a year, or Rs 500 a month — an effective rate of 0.5%. This is the same as 2025-26: the first three slabs (up to Rs 22 lakh) did not change in the Finance Act 2026.
Q3. Is a Rs 50,000 monthly salary taxed in Pakistan?
No. Rs 50,000 a month is Rs 600,000 a year, and the salaried slab is 0% up to Rs 600,000. There is no income tax on a lower salary either.
Q4. What salary tax relief did Budget 2026-27 give?
The relief starts above Rs 22 lakh a year (about Rs 183,333 a month). The Rs 22–32 lakh rate went from 23% to 20%, Rs 32–41 lakh from 30% to 25%, and above Rs 41 lakh, which used to go straight to 35%, it is now 29%, 32% and, after Rs 70 lakh, 35%. The 9% surcharge on salaried individuals (on taxable income above Rs 1 crore) was also abolished. The first three slabs up to Rs 22 lakh — 0%, 1%, 11% — did not change. Example: on Rs 300,000 a month, annual tax went from Rs 466,000 to Rs 416,000.
Q5. How do I work out my take-home salary with the salary tax calculator?
Open taxcalcpk.com/salary-tax-calculator, choose Monthly or Annual mode, enter your gross salary, and leave the Tax Year on "2026-27 (Current)" (choose "2025-26" to compare with last year). The calculator shows Take Home Monthly, Monthly Tax, Annual Tax, the Effective Rate and your slab.
Q6. What is the difference between gross and net salary?
Gross salary is what the employer pays before tax and other deductions. Net (take-home) salary is what reaches your account — after income tax and the employer's other deductions (such as provident fund). Enter your gross salary in the calculator; it works out only income tax, not the other deductions.
Q7. Does a bonus get the same tax rate?
Yes. Section 12(2)(a) counts bonus, commission, overtime and leave pay as salary, so a bonus is added to your annual taxable salary and the same slabs apply. There is no separate bonus tax. If a bonus moves you into the next slab, only the part falling in that slab is taxed at the higher rate.
Q8. What if my employer is deducting the wrong tax?
First check with the calculator what the amount should be, then speak to HR/accounts. If too much has been deducted by year end, you can file your annual return on IRIS and apply for a refund under section 170.
Q9. Do freelancers pay the same salary tax?
No — a freelancer is not an employee, so their income is business income rather than "salary", and non-salaried rates and their own withholding rules apply. This calculator is only for salaried employees. See the separate guide for freelancers.
Q10. Does being a filer (ATL) reduce salary tax?
Not the tax on salary. Tenth Schedule Rule 10(a) keeps section 149 (salary) outside the non-filer doubling, so the employer applies the same slabs to both. The benefit of the Active Taxpayer List is elsewhere — non-filers have more deducted on bank profit, property, cars, PTA mobile tax and other withholding.
